Scarves and Ethno fashion from LEMLEM

The art of Ethiopian weaving geared up for success: handcrafted fabrics and versatile cuts for that easy-going, elegant casual look.

Faves for fashionistas who expect that much more
It's all about stripes! LemLem is the ethical fashion label that model and actress Liya Kebede founded to support the weaving industry in her homeland of Ethiopia. With her striking creations, the New York-based designer melds traditional Ethiopian weaving with New York inspirations.

That way, LemLem Clothing not only promotes the economic independence of Ethiopia, but also brings delight to the whole world with fantastic designs. Her signature look is horizontal neon stripes on a white background, airy cotton-blend gauze, loose-fitting designs and elaborate details like knotted fringes or tassels.

The ultimate ethno look: Style with substance
Lemlem means “flourish” or “bloom” in Amharic. That is the language spoken by the Amhara in northern central Ethiopia. Allow your love for the ethno trend to unfold and discover fantastic summer essentials along with must-haves for cold days. The Lemlem label spans the divide between traditional artisan handcraft and contemporary design. These it-pieces are made in Ethiopia out of natural fabrics with great attention to detail.

Colourful collection for the beach and for casual wear
The colourful tunics and caftans are fantastic to throw on over your favourite bikini. The striped tops are also absolute eye-catchers worn with denim shorts or skinny jeans. Create the perfect layered look with the transparent tops. Crocheted crop tops and loose-cut jumpsuits made of silk crêpe round off the collection.

Traditional handcraft and modern graphics melded in one look
Every pair of shorts, every scarf, every individual piece of clothing from LemLem Clothing has been woven by hand and carefully embroidered. The graphic prints lend a certain indefinable touch to the airy, lightweight creations. Fabrics like cotton-blend gauze or cotton and wool blends make the key pieces into must-haves for your wardrobe. The oversized scarves can be worn as shawls or tied to transform into fantastic bags for stowing all your beach essentials. And on cold days, a poncho from the winter collection will keep you snug and warm. Be inspired all year round by the graphic prints and flowing designs – order fashion from the heart of Africa simply and easily online. Find your new favourite piece at Marin & Milou.

Born of love for her homeland
In 2007, when top model Liya Kebede heard of the poor work situation for weavers in her homeland of Ethiopia because of low demand, she decided to locally employ traditionally trained weavers under the Lemlem label. As she says herself, she wanted to give the weavers the opportunity to show their skilled craft to the entire world. Using ancient techniques, they weave a gauze made of a cotton blend that is transparent, feels lightweight and airy, and is perfectly suited to the warm weather. What began as a small label with a collection of lightweight summer scarves has, in the meantime, evolved into a renowned fashion brand that includes tunics, caftans, beach cover-ups, dresses, shoes, trousers, interior decor and children’s fashion. Originally from the capital of Addis Ababa, the model now lives with her husband and two children in New York. She operates the label from a studio in the district of Chelsea. Lemlem Clothing isn’t the first community-minded project the model has been engaged in. Liya Kebede has been UN Goodwill Ambassador for the World Health Organization since 2005.
